A standby generator spends most of its life idle, which is exactly when problems build up unnoticed. A short routine of regular checks makes it far more likely to start and run when the mains fails.
Regular checks
- Run the set on load at regular intervals, not just idle
- Check oil, coolant and fuel levels, and look for leaks
- Keep the battery charged and the terminals clean
- Test the changeover panel and the alarms
Fuel matters
Diesel left in a tank for a long time can collect water and sediment. Keep the tank clean, use fuel that is in date and have the fuel checked as part of each service.
A generator is only as ready as its last test.
